Enriched Spirit Bracelet

Elva Fields

I was reading recently about the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 and stumbled upon a statement from Lyndon B. Johnson who signed the act into law and said at the time, "While we work every day to produce new goods and to create new wealth, we want most of all to enrich man's spirit. That is the purpose of this act."

My spirit - from childhood into my late 40s today - has been deeply enriched by that act, through Mr. Rogers, Reading Rainbow, and Sesame Street on PBS to Tiny Desk Concerts, Fresh Air, and local music on NPR just to name a few favorite ways. Beyond its often-essential services like weather warnings, unbiased world and national news, and urgent local updates (to my own metro area as well as to farther-reaching, underserved rural communities,) PBS and NPR bring a vibrancy and color to life. (In fact, I probably learned my colors thanks to the programs they provide.)

If you feel the same way about these national treasures, then this gem is for you, a tribute to the brightness and joy these wonderful institutions bring to us all. Colorful glass beads, each made entirely by hand in Indonesia, alternate with tiny golden brass beads for a look as unique and diverse as the communities NPR and PBS serve across our country. A gold-over-brass lobster claw and chain clasp is adjustable, allowing lengths ranging from 7 to 8.25" length.

No two bracelets are alike and all are marvelously fun...and each gives $20 of its purchase price to NPR and PBS, making sure the spirit of our country can continue to be enriched by not-for-profit, for-all, community-supported invaluable programming.
