Protected and Loved

Elva Fields

Horse brasses were originally created in the early 17th and 18th centuries as protective pendants - amulets with symbolism thought to encourage safeguarding of a highly valuable asset at the time: one’s horse. Threaded through the leather bridle of the horse, they later became more decorative, often seen in parades and ceremonial occasions. Here, a vintage horse brass of English origin shows a heart within a classic punched and scalloped design, its golden finish bringing a hint of glamour to an otherwise beautifully-natural arrangement. Suspended from faceted brass beads (where it once would have been looped with leather) the medallion is linked to a strand of hand-carved bone beads from Kenya, each with a faceted brass bead from India between. All together, it is a simple, lovely look - ready to protect and love and be enjoyed. Measures 20” length, horse brass another 3.5” length.
