There Would be No Lotus

elva

The incredibly-wise Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, wrote a book entitled No Mud, No Lotus, essentially offering that without the difficulty in life, there would be no joy either. A lotus, he explains, must grow through mud to become a beautiful flower, and we were instantly reminded of this beautiful idea when we found this vintage necklace on a recent flea market trip. The textured lotus blooms at each end of the chain are both stylish and symbolic here, and we've paired the golden chain with two strands of faceted howlite beads that also provide some symbolism in their unique patterning. The gray veining in the stones is irregular and unusual across the pure, white surface of each bead, and the stone's very beauty comes from these imperfections. A lot to consider in a necklace...and just as wonderful even without the added metaphors. Measures 30" in length.
