Blissfully Aware

Elva Fields

One of the many reasons we adore vintage finds around here is that old adage, "They just don't make 'em like that these days..." And this vintage cigarette or card case is no exception; the craftsmanship and beauty of the finely-constructed wood herringbone pattern, careful golden brass framework, and the ingenuity of materials make this a truly remarkable example of an elegant, elevated, everyday item. Made by Bliss Brothers & Company, which was founded in the late 1800s in Massachusetts, this case-turned-pendant likely dates to the 1920s or 30s and opens to reveal hinged arms that might hold money, calling cards, or cigarettes in place. (Choose your own adventure with what you decide to keep inside...it might be the only accessory you need to keep paper bills or a credit card with you for an evening out!) We paired the honey-hued beauty with hand-carved and polished bone coin and faceted brass beads for a graceful, wear-anywhere look, clasped at back with a gilt copper hook at 18" length. Case measures 3 x 4" overall.
