Together They Fly
Elva Fields
Birds of a feather, right? To say we were thrilled when we found (and won!) this stunning pair of birds at an estate auction would be an understatement. Though they were missing the base-layer metal setting that links them together as a brooch, these winged wonders were originally created and sold in the 1940s by costume jewelry manufacturer Coro as a duette, a pair of clips that could be worn on a garment pinned on individually or mounted together on the underlying framework as one larger brooch. Aside from the missing mount, the birds were and are in immaculate condition - in the loveliest rose gold over sterling silver with the tiniest rhinestone decoration edging the wings and emerald-like eyes. Equal parts charm and elegance - and those green eyes led us to choose striped beads of handmade Indonesian glass in a verdant hue as their beautiful backdrop. With delicate stripes of white and deep copper against the deep green ground, we also added tiny faceted beads of copper throughout the five strands to play off of the rosy gloss of the birds' gold finish. An etched copper toggle completes the look at back in a longer length of 21.5" overall.
