Every Other Time

Deceptively simple and straightforward, there are many marvelous details in this wear-anywhere design, mostly in its backstory. Years ago, we discovered a small stash of ancient carved agate beads among crates of vintage African glass beads and convinced our friend, the most kind and thoughtful African bead dealer from Gabon who we've known since before we started Elva Fields 16 years ago, to allow us to purchase them. He had had them for years himself, and he knew they had been carved by hand and were hundreds of years old, but didn't have much other information about them. (We just knew they were beautiful and hadn't seen anything quite like them before...and honestly haven't since.) We've used 2 or 3 of these beautiful beads in past designs, and this one is nearly our last. When we found this strand of inlaid bone and wood beads (themselves hand carved and an example of superb craftsmanship from Kenya) we knew they'd make a perfect match. Blending magnificent materials (stone, wood, bone) and allowing their natural textures and finishes to just be together, this is a style that can truly go anywhere, anytime, and is a have-and-treasure-forever kind of necklace. Fastened at back with a brass hook, the necklace measures 25" length, with the agate measuring 4" in width.
